Retro Arcade Shmup · Capcom U.N. Squadron Remake & Evolution

Maximum Firepower

A high-octane side-scrolling dogfight arcade shooter inspired by Capcom's 1989 classic U.N. Squadron. Evolved from early Unity engine milestones into a modern AI-assisted sprite powerhouse. Tested and applauded by family, and demanded for release by close friends.

The Breakthrough Prototype

When Your Nephew and Friends Tell You to Ship

It started as an experimental coding sprint with OpenAI Codex: could modern language models reliably write math-heavy sprite sheet animation handlers, weapon collision matrices, and arcade momentum loops?

The answer came during the playtest. James handed the controller to his nephew—who has watched him tinker with games for over a decade and usually responds with polite encouragement. This time, he stopped playing, looked up, and said he was genuinely impressed. Shortly after, friends Luiz and Alex took a turn on the build and gave an immediate verdict: “James, you need to put this on the App Store right now.”

Historical Milestone Archive

The 2014 Unity Archive: Solo U.N. Squadron Single-Level Remake

Back in 2014, working completely alone, James built a solo single-level remake of Capcom’s classic arcade shooter U.N. Squadron in Unity. These archive milestone recordings capture that initial solo journey—building flight physics, vulcan cannon bullet pooling, parallax scrolling mountain terrain, enemy flight waves, and a climactic multi-phase boss dogfight from scratch. A decade later, Maximum Firepower is the modern AI reincarnation and spiritual successor to that ambition.

Early screen boundary constraints & flight handling test

Heritage 01

U.N. Squadron DNA

Classic 16-bit arcade tension. Heavy weapon upgrade trees, directional secondary munitions, ground-attack bomb runs, and multi-tier boss armor.

Innovation 02

Codex Sprite Engine

Automated sprite sheet slicing, hit-box rigging, and seamless state-machine code generated and refined with AI assistance.

Validation 03

Playtest Approved

Field tested by the hardest critics: James's nephew halted mid-session to offer genuine props, and Luiz and Alex demanded a commercial release.
